Founded on an idea conceived 28 years ago, Austral University Hospital has become a leading center for advanced healthcare in Argentina and beyond. "We had to gradually change our concept as a hospital set up for high complexity, developing the high-complexity sector," says Dr. Fernando Iudica, Medical Director of Austral University Hospital. Over time, the hospital has evolved significantly, with a strong focus on cardiology.
In cardiology, technological progress, particularly PET, has played a pivotal role. &"What PET provided was a true revolution in cardiology," says Dr. Daniel Cragnolino, Head of the Theragnosis and PET Nuclear Medicine Department at Austral University Hospital. By enabling the determination of blood flow using ammonia or rubidium, along with FDG imaging to reveal myocardial metabolism, PET fundamentally changed the approach to understanding coronary artery disease.
This is why Austral University Hospital places particular importance on advancing medical equipment and introduced a digital PET/CT system from United Imaging. The AI-enabled system provides enhanced image precision and clarity, supporting more accurate diagnosis and helping clinicians tailor treatment strategies for patients. "When we started to see the first images, they lived up to the reports. We saw images that were honestly undetectable with the previous method," Dr. Cragnolino states. "So this equipment change the patient's prognosis and changes the therapeutic focus of the patient," adds Dr. Fernando Iudica. Beyond clinical care, Austral emphasizes education, research, and collaboration. "We also educate people and conduct research," Dr. Iudica adds. "And one thing that is essential in being a professional is to train them to be good people." Through strategic alliances with leading hospitals across Latin America, the institution supports ongoing exchange and shared progress in healthcare.
Looking ahead, the hospital remains focused on advancing technology to deliver more precise and effective care. Dr. Fernando Iudica notes, "We want to be at the cutting edge of technology to obtain whatever latest generation of treatments to ensure better results and a higher cure rate. And that's where you can see how we differentiate ourselves from everything else."
